A Combination of Standardized and Dynamic Assessment — Usually completed over the first session. OT works on development of an Occupational Profile to learn about your child, family situation, and areas of concern. Goals are usually established across the first few sessions.
Completed In The Clinic — Typical sessions run for 50 minutes. This time is focused on helping your child to learn about their own nervous system and body, how to use movement and pleasing activities to get themselves regulated, as well as to complete more focused work on individually designed goals.
A Critical Part of Treatment! — It can be difficult to strategize, teach, and talk while your child is right there. Many children have difficulty waiting around during this portion of the session. But we feel that this is just as important as direct work with your child. You may be asked to come in for separate appointment(s), as needed. Some of these appointments are not covered by insurance.
Variable hourly rate — During OT sessions, we see your child in an ideal 1:1 setting. How they function within a group setting with peers can be very different. In many cases, one school observation can help to push our therapy goals forward more quickly, by helping us to do a check on how your child is using their skills in an everyday way. Collaborating with your child's teacher can also be an important part of our overall plan.
An Alternative Approach to Counseling — Many children benefit from being able to move their bodies while working on personal issues. Talk to your therapist about this type of work to determine if it is appropriate for your child.
Held On-Site or Off-Site — Sometimes, it can be helpful for your family to have someone else that knows your child in a different way to brainstorm and to provide ideas during meetings. This is typically not covered by insurance, but can be beneficial in many circumstances.
